the silencers

Religious institutions do not like surprises and especially dislike a spirituality which threatens the status quo. Threaten others with a loud and boisterous faith, and you will be politely (at first) asked to quiet down; dance your faith, instead of sitting still in your pew, and you will be asked to leave; talk about your faith with passion, and you will get expressions of concern about the inappropriateness of your emotions. Allow others to see your brokenness, and you will be reprimanded for being too open; hear the music of faith, and you will be warned of the danger of emotional instability. (from Messy Spirituality)

  • thanks sable. i wish i'd written it.

we as christians must learn to be a little less tied to the status quo, and a little more tied to grace and understanding.

  • I heard Mike speak once in New Orleans in 1994. I loved the way he passed out the handouts (threw them all over the pews) and talked about the "sacred white carpet" meeting room at an institutional church he worked for. He was great.

I haven't read a lot of his stuff, but this post you made reminds me of my general impressions of him. He was a keen observer and willing to challenge the status quo... to the degree he saw necessary.

Thanks for blogging. I may have to keep on checking this out.
